to Busuulwa Raphael's SiteThrough Glory international laboratory started only in 2005,it is fast becoming a household name in providing science training for schools without vital laboratory facilities. Many students who have come to our labs for training speak of the crucial hands on experience acquired from GILAB,without which the knowledge acquired from class would be mostly theoretical.Over the past three years alone, several training sessions have been organized for students during weekends and holidays. In 2006,more than 12 schools benefited from our training and they include; Molly and Paul high school,Greenlight high school,Namasuba high school,Kabowa Islamic Institute,City Campus high school etc.In 2007,two workshops of three days each were conducted in Mityana at Mityana Public Primary School and in kampala at molly and paul high school. In 2008,eight workshops of three days each were conducted in the districts of Mpigi-Gomba at Bukandula College school,Mubende,Mityana at mityana public primary school,Kamuli at Mordern Christian Secondary school and twice in Wakiso district at Zanta and Buloba

PROMOTION OF PRACTICAL SKILLS OF SCIENCE SUBJECTS |
Jan 17, 2009 |
Science subjects including biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and agriculture are a key foundation in professions like engineering, arctecture, pharmacy and veterinary and human medicine. This is especially so with the global awakening to the need for industrialization in the poor countries.Unfortunately,in the resent years, there has been little interest in the study of science subjects.
There is need to tackle this problem. One of the approaches being used by the government of Uganda is to hold an annual science week programme organized annually by the national council for science and technology. In this programme, stakeholders in science come together and discussat policy level how to revive science. This is certainly a major step in the right direction.
While appropriate policies are being discussed, thousands of students wish to pursue or are already pursuing sciences at O and A levels and even higher institutions. The problem is that not all schools have adquate facilities and teachers to anable these science students to actively study these science subjects.Students find themselves in overcrowded rooms and hardly experince the chance to have hands on practice on the equipment. It is therefore crucial to create an environment in schools and outreach programmes where active acquisation of knowledge and skills in sciences takes place.
Glory International Laboratory(GILAB) aims at anabling students have this opportunity for individual hands on practice using appropriate equipments all under experienced science teachers. This will go along way in improving information sharing, inprove communication between and among stake holders at various levels,as well as provision of systematic communication activities that will ensure conscious and active participation of implementers and intended beneficiaries in the programme. It will empower students by providing them information and knowledge to the extent that they will be able to identify and gain access to hands on science oriented opportunities that are appropriate, responsive to the community needs and promote increased socio-economic development at the household and community level.
OBJECTIVES 1.To build capacities of teachers to teach practical skills in science subjects. 2.To share with organized groups of students, practical skills in science studies without loosing focus on individual student needs. 3.Demonstrate to government and other actors in the education sector how such a one stop centre can be utilized to provide practical skills to students who attend schools with no facilities. 4.The tools are for the use of national and regional stakeholders working in the education sector. It is hoped that the tools will asist policy makers, teachers, students, programme coordinators of science subjects and schools. 5.To tackle the emerging needs expressed by teachers and students who have accessed or wish to access our services.Though unsolicited,it is our prayer that it be given some consideration in the interest of promoting active leaning of sciences in Uganda.
PROFILE Mr.RaphaelBusuulwa holds a Bsc(Education) from Makerere University. He has experience of 6(six) years as a teacher with Molly and pual group of schools and Green light high school Zanna.Worked as a deputy headmaster in the science foundation college Nabisunsa.Currently,Mr.Busuulwa is the director of BUMARA adult education centre Kibuye Kampala and the executive director of GILAB. The capacity of the training has been greatly improved. This includes recruiting three consultants teachers for each of the subjects biology, chemistry and physics.
